چکیده

One of the key properties of (natural) languages is that they are hierarchical. Phrases combine into larger phrases eventually covering complete sentences. The semantics of each phrase combine to form the complex meaning of the whole. A key question in explaining the origins and evolution of language is therefore how such hierarchical structures may originate and spread in a population. This paper reports on breakthrough experiments in which unbounded hierarchical structure can emerge as a side-effect of repair strategies in a population of agents.

Hierarchy in Fluid Construction Grammars

This paper reports further progress into a computational implementation of a new formalism for construction grammar, known as Fluid Construction Grammar (FCG). We focus in particular on how hierarchy can be implemented. The paper analyses the requirements for a proper treatment of hierarchy in grammar and then proposes a particular solution based on a new operator, known as the J-operator. The ...

Unify and Merge in Fluid Construction Grammar

Research into the evolution of grammar requires that we employ formalisms and processing mechanisms that are powerful enough to handle features found in human natural languages. But the formalism needs to have some additional properties compared to those used in other linguistics research that are specifically relevant for handling the emergence and progressive co-ordination of grammars in a po...

The Emergence of Semantic Roles in Fluid Construction Grammar

This paper shows how experiments on artificial language evolution can provide highly relevant results for important debates in linguistic theories. It reports on a series of experiments that investigate how semantic roles can emerge in a population of artificial embodied agents and how these agents can build a network of constructions. The experiment also includes a fully operational implementa...

What triggers the emergence of grammar?

The paper proposes that grammar emerges in order to reduce the computational complexity of semantic interpretation and discusses some details of simulations based on Fluid Construction Grammars.

A Design Pattern For Phrasal Constructions

This chapter has two objectives. It discusses a design pattern for phrasal constructions and introduces the templates that can be used to instantiate this pattern in Fluid Construction Grammar, using as illustration nominal phrases such as “the green mouse” or “this mouse of mine”. Phrasal constructions not only build phrases but also combine the meanings contributed by their constituents and p...
